Traditional Medicine

Korean traditional medicine originated in ancient and prehistoric times and can be traced back as far as 3000 B.C.  The practice is a range of techniques and diagnosis based on Asian philosophy, which itself was deeply grounded on observation and study of natural phenomena.

What is acupuncture?  The Mayo Clinic defines it as "a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force - known as Qi, believed to flow through the pathways (meridians or channels) in your body.  By inserting very thin needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners believe your energy flow will rebalance."  The stimulation appears to increase blood flow, boosts the activity of your body's natural painkillers and stimulates natural healing mechanisms.

How are Herbs used?  Herbalism is the study and practice of using plant material for the purpose of food, medicine, or health. Herbs are known to contain elements that have various medicinal effects.  For example, clinical, animal, and cellular research has shown mushrooms may be able to up-regulate aspects of the immune system. A notable mushroom used in Korean medicine is Phellinus linteus also known as Song-gen.

Herbs may be flowers, plants, shrubs, trees, moss, lichen, fern, algae, seaweed or fungus. Herbal medicines may be fresh, dried, whole, or chopped. Herbs can be prepared as infusions when an herb is soaked in a liquid, or decocted which is when an herb is simmered in water over low heat for a certain period of time. Herbs are commonly taken orally or applied with creams, oils, and added in baths.
